Nairobi. April 28-29th. A two-day workshop on ‘Reforming Fossil Fuel Subsidies for an Inclusive Green Economy’ took place last month in Nairobi. The workshop was hosted by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and supported by the Global Subsidies Initiative (GSI), the German development agency GIZ and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Achim Steiner, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNEP, opened the event by describing the impact fossil-fuel subsidies have in keeping economies locked into a carbon-intense development cycle. The workshop brought together around 80 participants from 25 countries from diverse geographical and economic development backgrounds to talk about reforming fossil-fuel subsidies.

As the Representative from China, iCET President, Dr. Feng An, provided insight on China fossil fuel subsides and low-carbon development policies. He shed light on China’s fossil-fuel energy consumption, fossil energy, energy efficiency and renewable energy subsidies situation, as well as the impacts of new energy vehicle policies on fossil energy consumption. Other country presentations, besides China, included experiences from Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Mexico, South Africa and Vietnam.
